What does it take to be a top workplace in a metro area filled with many quality employers, including Fortune 500 companies like DaVita and Liberty Global or government operations like the National Renewable Energy Laboratory? Based on employee surveys, this app provides answers that everyone from board chairmen to CEOs to rank-and-file workers will find not only informative but enlightening and entertaining.

The Denver Post partnered with Workplace Dynamics to gather the employee data from local businesses, nonprofits and government agencies throughout the Denver area and rank the Top 100 workplaces based on size — large, midsize and small. We also included 14 other companies that aren’t ranked but are doing it right. The employee surveys leave one thing clear: It takes a combination of leadership, vision, communication, benefits, flexibility and fun to attract and motivate today’s workforce. In other words, the paycheck still matters, but it’s only part of the equation.

Inside, you’ll find employer profiles, interviews with chief executive officers and employees, and focus stories on how they created their winning workplace cultures, how they give back to their communities and who is hiring. We also recognize employers that excelled in certain ways, including leadership, direction and work-life balance. Among the company names you’ll find in this eBook are Anadarko Petroleum Corp., The Container Store and Restaurant Solutions. If for no other reason than the hilarious video interview with Blair Pennington, the CEO of Restaurant Solutions, this app is worth downloading.

Here’s a rundown of some of the other features of this visually rich, interactive app:
• A diverse array of photographs of top workplaces. See what we’re talking about when we say these employers know how to make their workers happy. This includes a slideshow of a unique community-service program at a Panera Bread store and a photo-spread on three companies that help workers achieve work-life balance — Anadarko, Rally Software and TrainingPeaks.
• Interactive graphics that are cleverly crafted and provide information about employers and illustrate how the Denver area compares to other cities such as Austin, Boston, Dallas and Baltimore.
• Tips from columnist Liz Ryan on how to turn a negative culture around.
• Quotes from employees talking about what makes their workplaces special.

The Denver Post’s Top Workplaces 2013 celebrates excellence in the workplace — and the people that make that happen.
